Kate Hewitt never disappoints in her plots and writing style. However, the workings of Child Protective Services described here do not ring true. I was a special needs teacher and school administrator for 30 years and removing a child from a parent doesn’t work this way. Kate Hewitt has done it again. Crafted a story that got you in the heart and scrambled all of your emotions into a mix of mad, sad, suspicion, love, hope, and discouragement. You will feel a kinship with Ms Hewitt’s characters. They are just people who have all of the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and changing feelings we all have. This is a story of a mother and her son who get caught up in the DCFS and the family who fosters him. I was a little surprised at some of the decisions made by the seemingly overwhelmed DCFS caseworkers. The ending is quite beautiful, although maybe not quite what the reader expects. I would recommend this emotional story by Kate Hewitt.
