Ebook About Winner of the David J. Langum, Sr., Prize in American Historical Fiction Named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and “Required Reading” by the New York Post Edward Rutherfurd celebrates America’s greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga, weaving together tales of families rich and poor, native-born and immigrant—a cast of fictional and true characters whose fates rise and fall and rise again with the city’s fortunes. From this intimate perspective we see New York’s humble beginnings as a tiny Indian fishing village, the arrival of Dutch and British merchants, the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the convulsions of the Civil War, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the 1990s, and the attack on the World Trade Center. A stirring mix of battle, romance, family struggles, and personal triumphs, New York: The Novel gloriously captures the search for freedom and opportunity at the heart of our nation’s history.Book New York: The Novel Review :
Rutherford’s skillful technique of connecting the history of New York City by tying together generations of the same families intrigued and surprised me throughout the entire novel. All history should be taught this way! From the Native Americans and trappers through the Revolution to the Great Depression, I had difficulty putting the book down. The well-known people of US history were seamlessly intertwined with the fictional families. While reading this story, I came to understand the reasons behind some of the political and social issues of each era. Entertaining and thought-provoking. If you love New York -- or even if you used to love it (I am not thrilled with the direction of the city and its leadership nowadays); if you grew up there (as I have) or have an affinity for it -- you must read this book. I didn't want it to end. I am so truly impressed with the degree of work that has gone into this book -- the research and lovely writing style. The book covers five (or six) centuries of a Dutch family who originally settled in New York. It touches upon all the highlights of the centuries of growth of the city -- from the 1600s to the World Trade Center's demise in 2011 through the eyes and experiences of the Dutch family. We experience the American Revolution, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, etc. It also covers some major ethnic events ranging from slavery to the immigration and integration of various groups -- the Irish, Italians, Jews. The author so cleverly weaves together people from the various ethnic groups with the ancestors and generations of the original Dutch family. Since I grew up in New York, well, Brooklyn, and worked in Manhattan, as well as attended the theatre, museums, etc. I was so taken with all the descriptions. We even learned about the building of the skyscrapers and Empire State Building. The book was 893 pages, and when I had about 100 pages left, I stopped reading for a while -- I read two other books -- as I didn't want this one to end. I have been recommending it to whomever I can. I know this author has also written books about Paris, London and others, and I will consider those. A truly magnificent work, Mr. Rutherford. Bravo! Thank you ...
